DEC 1 – DSVC is pleased to introduce the prolific new partner at Pentagram New York, Eddie Opara.

Eddie was born to Nigerian parents in Wandsworth, London in 1972. He studied graphic design at the London College of Printing and Yale University, where he received his MFA in 1997. He began his career as a designer at ATG and Imaginary Forces and worked as a senior designer/art director at 2×4 before establishing his own studio, The Map Office, in 2005.

He joined Pentagram’s New York office as partner in October 2010.

Opara is a multi-faceted designer whose work encompasses strategy, design and technology. His projects have included the design of brand identity, publications, packaging, environments, exhibitions, interactive installations, websites, user interfaces and software, with many of his projects ranging across multiple media.

Paula Scher says: “Eddie represents the new generation of graphic designers for whom all forms of media and all dimensions of design are not separated from the initial concept but are an integral part of the total thought.”

Lisa Strausfeld adds: “Eddie is the ideal next generation Pentagram partner. He is a traditionally trained graphic designer and a self-taught software developer with a perfectly tuned eye and keenly strategic mind. He is what every client needs.”

We hope you’ll join us Wednesday, December 1st, for a night of drinks and laughs with all your Dallas creative friends, and say hello to our special guest, Eddie Opara.

PROCEED AND BE BOLD! is the story of Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., who at 40 years of age abandoned the traditional American Dream to follow his own. Unsatisfied with his comfortable, middle-class life, Amos traded in his computer for a printing press and his white collar for a pair of overalls. Armed with life, liberty, peanuts, and a meager yearly income of $7,000, Amos cranked out a new, mutinous declaration of independence. http://www.20kfilms.com/filmsites/proceedandbebold/index.php

The CREATIVE Urban Race is a design competition and urban adventure like no other. Teams of two use their knowledge of design and the Houston creative scene to solve 9 clues leading them to complete innovative challenges, all while discovering the city’s creative pulse. AIGA Houston is teaming up with local businesses to challenge your creative minds in the service of a worthy cause. (Participating businesses TBA)

The fun doesn’t stop there! That same evening, we’re hosting an award ceremony and closing social at Winter Street Studios showcasing many of the businesses that we teamed up with. DJs + Raffles + Drinks & Food, come out and support YOUR creative industry!

Objective: Test your creative mettle while supporting a worthy cause! To promote businesses in the local design industry and have a little competitive fun in the process, we’re teaming up with Houston Food Bank to collect non-perishable food items (which will be collected on-site) and create artwork for their new facility. How are we creating the artwork, you ask? By traveling to and solving the day’s 9 design challenges, your team will earn points toward a final design challenge: a poster design-off aimed at communicating a chosen social message. What type of social message? You’ll have to make it to the end to find out! Finished entries will then be juried by a celebrity panel and the winners will be announced at the closing party.

Grand Prize: WINNING TEAM RECEIVES A PAIR OF APPLE iPADS! 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded.

Race Registration:

I have never been able to quite describe what it is that I do. I usually group it all under the umbrella of graphic design. But it’s not really just graphic design. I take artsy photos. I draw things constantly. I write. I direct animation or live action. I show work in galleries. I sort of like to try a lot of things out.

The moment I begin to feel too comfortable, I change something or try something new. Change is good. This natural desire to evolve and to create a path for myself has been something I have been fortunate enough to do. Come join me for a brief moment where I reflect on how I have evolved as a designer and maybe you too will see how you have evolved or can evolve.

About Brian
Brian received his BFA in Graphic Communication at the University of Houston in 2000 graduating Magna Cum Laude. Since then he’s been involved in a wide variety of projects both small and large. They’ve ranged from art directing Apple iPod tv spots, to Black Eyed Peas music videos, to pro bono posters for KCRW, to rebranding ESPN U.

Earl Christian “Chris” Rovillo was born in Dallas March 22, 1951. On January 5, 1974 at the age of 22 he married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Eugenia “Jeane” Dabney Gano Rovillo. Witty and well-mannered, his gift with words was equally matched by his talent as a graphic artist who achieved national renown. Chris touched many lives during his distinguished design career. He began as an accomplished art director at Neiman Marcus, moved to the Bloom Agency and later was a principal for the design arm of the Richards Group before founding Rovillo Design Associates in 1990.

As a faculty member of the graphic design departments of the University of North Texas and Texas A&M, Commerce, Chris continued to inspire and share his gift with students who would later start careers in the design world. Chris was both an inspired professional and an inspiration to others. A former president of the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, Chris received that organization’s highest honor, the Golden Egg award for lifetime achievement.

His great talent has been recognized repeatedly by national and international creative organizations, and he served as an invited judge in graphic design competitions throughout the country.
