Today marks the one-year anniversary of Typekit’s launch. It’s been an unbelievable 12 months of growth and learning, not just for us but for webfonts, web design, browser development, and so much more. And we can’t think of a better way to mark this moment than to announce one of our most exciting partnerships to date.

Adobe and Typekit are teaming up to bring some of the world’s most popular, recognizable, and respected fonts to the web. Starting today, you’ll be able to use classics like Adobe Garamond, News Gothic, Myriad, and Minion plus many more on your website — all of them newly optimized and hinted for the screen. These fonts look fantastic.

GeekBeat.TV is a short video show, hosted by Cali Lewis, about technology news, current gadgets, and amazing research projects that will affect your future. I have a passion for technology, and I work hard to find the most interesting, most compelling, most exciting stories out there, and tell you about them in a quick five minutes.

You can watch GeekBeat.TV being shot live and see the production in action sometimes at CaliLive.TV

Host, Cali Lewis

Becoming a Geek

When I was eight years old, I fell in love with technology when I saw my mom pounding away on the keyboard of a word processor. I made her teach me how to type and I spent every moment I could on that word processor. Soon after, my dad got a Nintendo and a “real” computer with an actual screen instead of a tiny display. When I visited him, I used that PC as much as I was allowed, and woke up before anyone else in the house to play Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt on the Nintendo. My rule was to keep the volume so low that only I could hear it. I didn’t want to wake anyone up because that would disrupt my play time!

When I was fourteen, I started learning how to code HTML and built my first website from scratch. Then I dabbled in ASP and Java, and now of course CSS and PHP. I wouldn’t call myself a programmer by any means, but I do enjoy the process of “playing” with code.

You know you’re smart – but does the Internet? When a potential client or employer starts clicking around “digital you,” the pieces of the puzzle should be more robust than a one-sheet resume and a bunch of chatter about your social life. True, we can’t share everything we do at work, but there are smart ways to broadcast the ideas and activities that you spend the majority of your waking hours – your work day – busting your ass on. The online tools outlined here will help you paint a more complete picture of yourself. After all, it’s okay to show off when it’s deserved.

In the last four years of my life I’ve been doing different things. University first, then internship, then a real job in the gaming industry, then recently a new one in the web and communication field, after a huge change in perspective… and I actually guess it’s more or less the same for a lot of you.

After a bit of thinking I realized there’s one thing I’ve been doing throughout the entire process and I’m positive I’ll be doing in my future: presenting. Not focusing on any topic in particular, it’s the pure act of putting ideas into slideshows and present them to someone, whether it’s a CEO, a random manager, a client, a partner, a group of collaborators, a supervisor.

One of the most interesting statistics to come out of this chart is that 65% of the worlds top 100 companies has a twitter account, now that in its self might not be all that surprising, but in comparison to Facebook (54%), YouTube (50%) and blogs (33%) that’s a serious number considering the length of time that Facebook, YouTube and Blogs have been around comparability to Twitter.

On a percentage scale across all 4 social mediums, it’s interesing to not that only 20% of the worlds top 100 companies are using all four platforms to engage their followers, fans and workers.

Willie Baronet – We are all homeless @WillieBaronet
While taking a class on interventionist art in the Fall of 2009, I organized an event called “We are all homeless,” I want to share parts of this journey, collecting homeless signs, making art with them, what it feels like to be ignored by people, and plans for the next event(s). My purpose is to raise awareness, because we are all homeless.

Ajay Waghray – LIFE: What I Learned After College Graduation @ajaywaghray
I got closer to death than any completely healthy 23-year-old would ever imagine. You learn a lot when there’s a chance that you might not make it. Not just about your body and health, but about life. Things that any average, fresh American college graduate probably won’t learn until it’s too late.

Carrie Corcoran – Pole Dancing @carriecares
My topic of discussion is Pole Dancing. The Pole Dancing community has really seen a lot of controversy in the last few years but this art form is now being more widely accepted as a way to get and stay fit. It is empowering and builds a woman’s self confidence. Take a spin around the pole with me and feel what it is like to take flight.

David Gouldin – The Economics of Free @dgouldin
The internet has radically changed the face of the music industry. The days of monetizing recorded music are over, but the death of one industry has allowed the birth of another. How can musicians tackle the challenge of making money when the reliable revenue of album sales can no longer sustain them? By leveraging the economics of free.

Emily Rushing – Pirates v. Ninjas; Librarianship in the 21st Century @emily_rushing
A passionate supporter of library services and librarians, Emily will speak on what librarianship means today, what librarians really do, and how librarians are today’s information ninjas. Topics covered include: databases, SecondLife, crowdsourcing, folksonomies, and Freedom of Information. Bun hairdos and glasses optional!

Eric Bruntmyer – Three Questions for Life @ericbruntmyer
I’m a Type A personality. Because of that, I almost ruined my life before I turned 30. After some reflection, I realized I had to answer three questions before I went any further. From those answers, I then made a plan for the rest of my life. I will be sharing the steps I took to build the life I wanted.

Eric Swayne – Put Yourself Out of Business @eswayne
Dear Social Media Guru: there will come a time when knowing esoteric tools and platforms won’t be enough. More and more people “get it,” and you need a new business model. It’s time to talk about being more: about inviting collaboration, about unleashing potential, and becoming a catalyst for others. It’s time to put the Guru out of business.

James Bird Guess – The Success Process @jamesbirdguess
He will discuss going through the process of success is worth more than achieving success. He will mesmerize the audience with his passionate story of living his passion, creating wealth, and going from nothing to something. This life changing and mind refining talk will inspire the audience on why it is important to encounter difficult circumstances, and how to endure and transcend their circumstances..

James Snider – When Engineers Become Marketers…bad things happen @JSnid
When I told my dad (a prominent Austin doctor) that I was leaving software engineering and moving into marketing, his response was “Well…I guess I can tell my friends that you are between jobs…” Marketing appears to be little more than “playing for a living” to people in brainy occupations such as electrical engineering.

Jessica Miller-Merrell – 7.2 Ways to Get Fired Because of Social Media @blogging4jobs
Social media is changing the way we do everything and companies are either embracing or running scared. Learn about 7.2 ways to get fired from social media from the funny to ridiculous. Companies do the craziest things and employees are often even funnier. Listen and learn from a former corporate HR person talk about the how, why, and what to do on social media that will land you in the office with HR, your box of belongings and the pink slip.

Joe Flowers – Crowdsourcing the Taco @unhatched
Being turned down from a job you would be perfect for sucks – a lot. Wouldn’t it be nice to get revenge? I thought so after I was passed on by a major player in the food industry for a dream opportunity. I turned a vengeful moment into an opportunity to explore the city and create a fun website that is helping make sense of the Dallas taco craze.

John Keehler – LOST in 5 Minutes @randomculture
Are you a LOST fan who needs to be able to succinctly describe the show, or perhaps a new viewer who doesn’t want to drop hundreds of dollars on DVDs, then this is the Ignite session for you… SPOILER ALERT – learn all about LOST in just 5 short minutes!

Jon Hartman – Attaining Awesomeness Through Chess @techdojo
Parents, teachers, and mentors always tell us to hang around successful people to become the same. They’re right, but we don’t just walk up to Bill Gates and ask if he wants to go to Sizzler. Greatness attracts more greatness and it starts with us. Using the lower-level chess tactics that enable the best players to lock wits with the fiercest supercomputers, we’ll dissect and apply the same tactics to everyday life, from finances and education to fitness.

MeLinda McCall – Relax at 70mph! @MeLMcCallTweets
Need to “detox” from a stressful week at work? Come get a “natural high” through the exciting sport of autocrossing! It is a fantastic adrenaline rush and a great way to take the edge off a crazy week of work. Cars raced during these non-professional motorsports enthusiast events are often driven on the street to work and back during the week!

Rob Scott – How to Grow and Manage Your Online Reputation @scottandscott
In business your reputation is your brand, you grow it by doing great work building a happy culture and giving back to your community. Everybody understands the important of growing and managing an offline reputation – but few are paying attention to growing and managing their online reputation.

Tommy Thompson – A New Brand of US Hispanics @inspire_tommy
They are young, mix two languages and live in two distinctly different cultural worlds. They are bicultural Hispanics and they’re quickly becoming the face of the U.S. Hispanic population. They’re powerful, have a voice and want to be heard. As such, they’re redefining the U.S. Hispanic experience. What does life look like through their eyes?

Wendi Medling – A Fair Trade Trip Around the World
I want to talk to Dallas about fair trade and how they can get involved, and what fair trade really is. This topic is a timely and socially responsible one because it illustrates the economic impact of our daily purchasing decisions on the lives of the people who make our goods and grow our food.

Every line counts for Texas based illustrator and artist Toby Thane Neighbors. Created as part of the Story Motel group show at the Owl & Lion Gallery, this illustration successfully weaves warm tones and detailed lines to transport us to the old frontier. Neighbors has a nice way of cataloging objects in his works, and this piece is no exception with its bag of bullets, feather, and hungry badger at the heels of the pensive gamekeeper.

I’m proud to announce that I’ve completed the Franchise Bold typeface. Over the last few years, I found myself many times searching for a quality, rounded block typeface that has some character. So finally, I decided to draw one up myself, and Franchise Bold is the result. Franchise is a powerful display typeface aimed at achieving a unifomity without compromising style. Franchise is just as much at home on the front of a donut shoppe as it is on the scoreboard at a football stadium. Take a look!
